KEY POINTS:
Auckland City Council will meet the Fire Service today to discuss the safety of the Queen St upgrade after firefighters could not find a water hydrant.
The firefighters spent nearly half an hour searching for a hydrant as they tackled an electrical fire at the weekend. The hydrants in the area had been covered by wood and not correctly labelled.
Deputy Chief Fire Officer Roger McAllister said he was appalled when the more than 20 firefighters could not find a hydrant because of the $44 million upgrade.
"If this [fire] was more serious, everyone here would be stuffed because we couldn't find a hydrant thanks to the roadworks," Mr McAllister said.
Paul Edmonds, project leader for the CBD upgrade, said all hydrants were now visible, but the meeting was called so the council could walk the area with fire officers and follow up on their concerns.
