Hugely talented Wairarapa middle distance runner Stevie Paine broke a record which had stood for a decade when she won the junior girls 800m final at the North Island secondary schools track and field championships in Wellington over the weekend.
Paine clocked 2mins 15.75secs to better the previous best time set
by Monica Williams in 1999 and she picked up a second gold medal by winning the junior girls 300m title in 42.29secs.
Classy hurdler April Campbell was a convincing winner of the intermediate girls 80m hurdles in 12.12secs and a popular success came from Luke Gibbs in the wheel chair race for males over 200m which he won in 1min 2.60secs. There were numerous other notable efforts on the track by Wairarapa athletes as well.
Laura McKenna, in her first year of serious athletics, placed fourth in the junior girls 200m and fifth in the 100m, Molly Creagh was fourth in the intermediate girls 400m final and Tom Quinn was fourth in both the junior boys 800m and 1500m events, the latter in a personal best time
In the field it was Courtenay Fafeita who stole the limelight for Wairarapa with silver medals in the intermediate girls discus and hammer throw with distances of 40.41m and 38.83m respectively.
Tim Girling-McLean, new to big competition, was a very creditable third in the junior boys shot put, John Greig mixed it with some formidable opposition in finishing sixth in the seniors shot put and seventh in the discus, Alex Fafeita was fourth in the junior boys discus and hammer throw events despite being eligible for the same age group next year and another newcomer to this level, Jess Hollis, was a promising fourth in the junior girls javelin.
