There is this new cafe that's opened in the backstreets of Grey Lynn, corner of Ariki and Crummer streets, called Ariki Store. All the food is fantastic, I particularly like the Cointreau salmon gravlax on bagels with cream cheese, capers and honey mustard - quite good value at $6.50, I would have thought.

The best takeout option would be fish and chips, NZ does this well and the kids love it.

For the best takeout option to take to the beach or park - we're lucky - we have the choice of plenty of fresh food from our La Cigale French Market. My favourite options are a rotisserie chicken, an oozy French cheese from the cheese counter, two to three different salads from stallholder Peter of Musical Knives, a jar of chutney from Terry of Listers Products, a rustic loaf of bread hot from the oven and a bottle of cold rose from Wine Direct.
For a sandwich option I can't go past the ultimate street food - our famous La Cigale pork belly sandwiches. Either the original option with the "works" - sliced pork belly, chutney, aioli, baby cress, sliced tomatoes and topped with a piece of crackling, or our version of a Vietnamese banh mi sandwich - sliced pork belly, pulled pork shoulder, chicken liver , grated carrot, fresh coriander and spring onion salad, optional chilli and a drizzle of spicy sauce.
