A woman TAB worker was forced to open a safe by an armed robber in Auckland this morning.
The staff member opened the rear door of the Mt Albert TAB on New North Road at 8am, when a man in the rear parking area overlooking the train station approached her.
Police said he had his hands in his pockets "indicating a weapon".
The robber ordered the woman into an office where he made her kneel in front of a safe, which he made her open with the weapon pressed to her head.
The staff member filled the robber's backpack with cash, before he tied her hands behind her back and fled.
The robber was described as Maori or Polynesian, about 170cm tall and of solid build.
He was aged in his late teens and had a moustache and goatee, and wore a blue cap, grey hooded sweatshirt, light blue jeans and white trainers.
He left a red "Active Intent" backpack at the scene.
