South Wairarapa Workingmen's Club have something to celebrate.
They have won the Southey Honda inter-club snooker league's champion team trophy for the first time in many years.
Led by captain Terry Hewson, they had the one freakish loss, a 12-0 thumping by Masterton Cossie C, but revenged that defeat later in the season. Overall though consistency was clearly their main attribute. In fact, they had all of 10 points to spare from second placed Cossie C at the competition's end.
The finals of the new Wairarapa singles league has also been completed with last year;' winner and national club champion, Ross Fafeita, sidelined through injury. This made for a very open competition with several players seen as serious contenders.
Service's Club stalwart Jim Birchall beat fancied players Terry Hewson and Darryl Silverwood on the way to the final and in the other half of the draw Jim Parkin defeated Kevin Whitburn and Dave Walker.
The final between Birchall and Parkin was very tense and hinged on the final black in the final frame with Birchall sinking the black only to go in off the cue ball and give the title to Parkin.
