KEY POINTS:
South Auckland animal control officers seized 11 unregistered dogs during an early morning swoop in Otara yesterday.
The officers went door to door in three streets, much to the dislike of several residents who shouted abuse while their dogs were being taken away. At each house the officers would ask if the owners had any dogs and if so were they registered.
Any dogs that were not registered were seized unless the $120 registration fee was paid. The 11 dogs that were taken away will be held until the owners pay the registration fee and a $300 fine. If the payment is not made within seven days the dogs will be put down.
The swoop, which comes after several high-profile dog attacks in the past few weeks, is part of a regular programme of checking for unregistered dogs in South Auckland.
