Is the speed 50km or 70km in residential Ngaumutawa Rd?

Motorists may have been a bit confused about the speed limit on the road yesterday with conflicting speed signs posted on the road.

Both north and south entrances into the residential area had 50km/h and 70km/h posted together leaving drivers in doubt as to the correct speed limit.

Masterton District Council spokesman Sam Rossiter-Stead said speed signs in the centre of the road had been removed by a logistics company earlier in the week for a truck to take a large load through the road.

However, when they were put back in place the speed limits were put around the wrong way, Mr Rossiter-Stead said.

"They took the signs down to get the load through and they have put them back the wrong way ... it was wrong at the other end of the road as well."

Masterton police duty Sergeant Simon Irving said if a driver was caught speeding it would be the speedster's lucky day.

"We probably wouldn't enforce it," he said.

Since being notified by the Times-Age about the wrong signage a council staff member has turned the signs around the right way - so there is no excuse now if motorists are caught speeding on the road.
