Two Swiss backpackers who had not been heard from since setting out to do the Tongariro Alpine Crossing have been found after a police alert.
Family members called authorities when they didn't hear from Miriam Haggmann and Simon Oesch after the pair said they were doing the crossing on Monday.
A police spokeswoman said this morning the pair had now contacted friends and family and were safe.
