KEY POINTS:
A man who disappeared in Waikato's Lake Karapiro has been named.
Jude Willem Esselbrugge, 20, failed to surface after jumping into the water.
Keeleys Landing is a popular but dangerous swimming spot on State Highway 1 south of Cambridge, where several people have drowned in recent years.
The Hamilton man was swimming with friends when he jumped into the water from the top of a cliff. Senior Sergeant Eddie Carr said a friend who jumped with him surfaced but the missing man did not.
Mr Carr said signs warning people not to swim there were regularly removed or vandalised. "But the signs are still there now," he said.
A police rescue boat searched the lake while other police searched the shores of the lake on foot.
The police dive team from Wellington was due at the lake later this afternoon to search the lake bed for the body.
