Thousands of children from underprivileged areas will learn to swim this year thanks to a donation from the New Zealand Herald Foundation.
WaterSafe Auckland received more than $4000 last month from the charity to fund swimming lessons at low decile intermediate schools.
Teachers have been invited to take part in programmes which will help them to deliver quality water safety skills.
WaterSafe Auckland executive officer Sandy Harrop said schools that could not usually afford aquatic education would receive lessons for students and training for teachers.
She said WaterSafe would also target schools with immigrant students.
