Wairarapa swimmers were in devastating form at the Capital City Ford Classic carnival held in Wellington on Saturday.
Up against formidable opposition from Wellington-based clubs, members of both the Carterton and Masterton clubs rose to the challenge and five of the 10 individual age-group swimmers were winners.
Bella Biggs of Carterton was
involved with Madaleine Thomas of Swimzone Racing in an epic struggle for honours in the girls' 10-11yrs section, with Biggs taking the spoils by a solitary point, 72 to 71, and just four points behind in third place was Michelle Sasse of Swimzone. Biggs also set what should be confirmed as a new Wairarapa long-course record for her age-group when she won the 400m individual medley in 5m 44.41s, a record previously held by Sophie Foote.
Taylah Mawson of Carterton was dominant in the girls' 12-13yrs section, her 82 points being 32 more than runner-up Josie Kozyniak of Capital, while Rebeka Rzmanova of Masterton was clearly the most versatile performer in the girls' 14-15 years division. She tallied 76 points there, with second-placed Claudia Simpson of Capital on 47 points.
Masterton's Sven Tobias headed the boys' 12-13 years grade with 61 points, well clear of runner-up Conor Bowron of Capital on 49 points, while the boys' 14-15 years overall title was a battle between two Wairarapa swimmers, Joe Hammond of Carterton and Ben Ruback of Masterton, Hammond taking first place with 73 points and Ruback second with 64 points.
A highlight of Saturday's meet was the resurrection of the Wheel of Pain, an event contested by the top 10 swimmers over a distance and stroke decided by random draw. It was staged as a 200m butterfly and saw Isaac Foote of Masterton score an impressively comfortable win.
