Revered swim coach Duncan Laing has been diagnosed with a brain tumour and will have surgery next week.
The operation will come just days after a testimonial dinner in Dunedin tomorrow to recognise his contribution to swimming.
Many of Laing's proteges, including double Olympic champion Danyon Loader, and fellow coaches will attend the function.
Laing, who is 75, said last night that a small tumour was detected about three weeks ago after he complained to his doctor of dizziness.
"I was driving the car one day and things just didn't feel right. I didn't feel safe behind the wheel," he said.
He will have surgery at Dunedin Hospital.
"It's a bit of a bugger, but it will be good to get it done. Once it's over, there is still a bit of time left in me yet."
Despite his health concerns, Laing said he was looking forward to the weekend and was adamant he would be up to enjoying the celebrations.
"I've had a hell of a lot of people ringing me up to wish me well and say they were coming. I'll just take it easy, sit back and relax."
