KEY POINTS:
A La Nina weather pattern means more rain, cloud and humidity is expected to cover the North Island this summer - but surfers are unlikely to mind.
The Metservice is predicting more east and north-east winds which will translate into bigger waves along the North Island's east coast beaches.
There is also the prospect of La Nina leading to an increase in tropical cyclone activity. Cyclones are known for producing good swells on the North Island's east coast.
Bay of Plenty surf forecaster Peter Morse said the jury was still out on whether there would be more cyclone activity.
He warned that while La Nina would likely bring more swell, it could also have a down side for surfers.
"Yes, we should get more waves but there could be more on-shore winds too," he said.
If you are not into hitting the waves, then make sure an umbrella is close. Niwa and MetService warn the upper North Island will have a wet, sticky few months.
"These conditions will bring above average temperatures everywhere and more rain in the north and east of the North Island," said Bob McDavitt from MetService.
He said the rain will be in bursts but "the temperature will stay above average - it will be hot and humid".
