KEY POINTS:
Police arrived at the scene of a nose-to-tail accident on Saturday to find the female driver staggering all over the road - and a glass of wine resting in the cup holder of her car.
North Shore officers were called to the accident about midday after the driver of the other car - which had been hit from behind - noticed the 29-year-old woman staggering around behind him.
When she was breath-tested, she returned a reading of nearly 1400 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath - 3 1/2 times the legal limit.
It is understood the woman had been drinking wine and tequila since the previous day and police said they were amazed she was still able to stand, let alone drive.
"The average person would have been on their hands and knees," said one officer.
The woman was taken to the North Shore police station, where she was charged with driving with excess breath alcohol.
No one was injured during the car accident, which happened in Birkdale.
