Justin Goldstone's red swastika tattoo crept above his collar as he sat in the dock.
Sentencing him in the High Court at Auckland yesterday, Justice Forrest Miller queried media reports that he was a prospect for a gang.
Defence lawyer David Reece said Goldstone "doesn't accept that, but you will note it is not against the law to be associated with a gang".
He said Goldstone bought his shotgun for protection after threats to report him for benefit fraud.
But the Weekend Herald has learned that beneath Goldstone's smart, dark suit and crisp buttoned shirt yesterday was another tattoo of a Nazi-style swastika.
The words "f*** the police" were also etched into his shoulderblade.
