Suspicion surrounds a blaze that engulfed a red-zoned property in Kaiapoi, north of Christchurch, overnight.
The fire was first reported at the Hilton St house at 5.30pm and local firefighters spent an hour putting it out.
But they were called back to the property hours later when the house was again well alight. This time they spent five hours bringing it under control.
Appliances have left the scene, but a Fire Service spokesman said fire safety officers, as well as police, are investigating.
