A fire in Porirua, described by police as an arson, was discovered only when an occupant of the house got out of bed to use the toilet early yesterday.
"The occupant of a house in Champion Street has gone to use the toilet and discovered that her kitchen was ablaze," said Detective Sergeant Christiaan Barnard.
After raising the alarm, the woman and the other two people at the flat were able to escape without suffering serious injuries. The fire was extinguished by the Fire Service.
"The fire was limited to the kitchen area, which suffered smoke damage," Mr Barnard said.
Police are seeking sightings of suspicious behaviour around the corner of Hereford Street and Champion Street, including in the park area next to Cannons Creek School.
