KEY POINTS:
A fire that destroyed an unoccupied house in Waitara early this morning is being treated as suspicious, New Plymouth police said.
The house in the town, 16km northeast of New Plymouth, was ablaze when firefighters arrived about 2.40am.
The tenants had been away for several days, said Detective Sergeant Greg Gray.
Police and fire safety officers had inspected the site this morning, and believed the fire may have been deliberately lit.
