KEY POINTS:
An elderly man was found dead in his Opotiki home this morning in what police say are suspicious circumstances.
Detective Inspector Rob Jones said police were called to the Windsor St address about 7.30am by a local resident.
The 78-year-old man was the sole occupant of the eastern Bay of Plenty home.
"It is still too early for police to speculate on both the circumstances and cause that contributed to the death of the elderly man," Mr Jones said.
A large cordon was put up around the property today while experts conducted a scene examination.
Mr Jones said police were keen to talk to anyone who was in the Windsor, Richard, Ford, or St John street areas last night, and anyone who may have seen anything suspicious overnight should contact Opotiki police.
He said a post-mortem examination would take place tomorrow in Auckland and the man's name would not be released until his family had been contacted.
