Two suspected grenades found at a central Christchurch city site today have been ruled inert by bomb disposal experts.
Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (Cera) contractors were doing demolition work on a Crown-owned residential red zone home in Richmond when they uncovered the "grenades" just before noon.
"As per the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority safety management plans, the contractor immediately stopped works, evacuated the site and called the New Zealand police," a Cera spokeswoman said.
A cordon was set up around North Avon Rd, Flesher Ave and River Rd while army bomb disposal experts rushed to the scene.
At 1.30pm, police confirmed that the bomb experts had ruled out any threat.
