Two men are "assisting police with enquiries" after being disturbed loading boxes of suspected stolen cheese into their vehicle.
A member of the public alerted Manawatu police and then followed the vehicle, observing boxes of cheese being thrown from the window along rural backroads.
Police said two men were located soon after the cheese was seen being thrown and another pair were still being looked for.
"Each box contained a number of ten kilogram blocks of cheese, many of which disintegrated when they hit the road. It is however believed a number may have survived and might have been picked up by other members of the public," the statement said.
Police asked anyone who had found any of the cheese to contact them.
They said it would be "easily identifiable by the level of road grit found in the contents when eaten".
It is unclear where the cheese has come from.
