Access has been restricted to parts of the Dunedin Hospital campus because of suspected asbestos contamination.
The affected areas were not those used by patients, the Southern District Health Board said.
"The areas identified are in areas generally only accessible to appropriately trained and equipped trade staff and contractors and we have put in place [additional] controlled access to these areas.
"Once we have the full picture, we will, if necessary, take proper precautions to remove or encapsulate the asbestos."
Test results were expected by the end of this month.
