Suspected arson at murder scene

Police are investigating a suspected arson at the scene of James Whatuira's death in Woodville.

The fire occurred at about 1am on Saturday at an address in Ormond St, Woodville.

Police and a fire investigator were examining the property which has been extensively damaged.

The address became the scene of a homicide inquiry on January 4, after 49-year-old Pahiatua man James Whatuira was found dead there.

Detective Sergeant Johnny Oram said a link between the murder and arson had not yet been made, but police considered it to be a "strong possibility".

"We want to speak to anyone that has any information about this suspected arson, including reports of any suspicious behaviour witnessed in the area during the early hours of Saturday morning."

Five men were arrested and charged in relation to Whatuira's murder last week.

A 41-year-old Nelson man has been charged with murder while four other men from Dannevirke and Woodville were charged with being party to the murder.
