The Government could be at risk of losing confidential information through the use of portable storage devices such as iPhones, USB sticks and mobile phones.
A Privacy Commission survey of 42 government departments and agencies has found they're used widely.
Overseas there's been a string of security and privacy scandals caused by officials losing storage devices.
Privacy Commissioner Marie Shroff says she does not want to see it happen here.
Ms Shroff says people in both the public and private sectors need to realise the risk losing a memory stick or similar could pose.
