A Runanga man's surprise attack on a police officer in a cell ruled out his chances of bail, a court has heard.
Nigel Ross Hipson, 37, had been arrested on charges of threatening to kill and assaulting a woman with intent to injure after police attended a domestic dispute.
It was alleged at a bail hearing before Judge David Saunders yesterday in the Greymouth District Court that Hipson attacked a constable who was bringing him a cup of coffee, knocking him unconscious.
He now faces another two charges of threatening to kill and assaulting a police officer with intent to escape.
Judge Saunders, hearing from prosecutor Steven Greer that Hipson was smoking two bags of the 'legal high' K2 a day, said that he could not risk giving him bail. Hipson will next appear on November 20.
