A beached whale caused a stir in Whangamata yesterday, as dozens of people turned out to see the mammal.
Photographer Daniel Davie, who shot this picture of Braedon Williams surfing in the background said he went down to the beach after getting texts from friends about the animal.
"It was huge and half the town was there. You don't see many whales up on the beach here in Whangamata, so everyone was texting each other to come down to have a look."
A Whangamata Coastguard spokesman said the whale was dead when it washed ashore around 4.30pm.
