Forty surfers used their surfboards to mark a safe landing area for a rescue helicopter trying to reach an injured man on a beach at Matakana Island, near Tauranga, yesterday.
The man was injured while surfing and had stopped breathing when the helicopter was called about 11.15am, police said.
It was unclear how he was hurt but four people gave him CPR and he had resumed breathing by the time the helicopter arrived. He was flown to hospital in a moderate condition.
