KEY POINTS:
A man who suffered a life-threatening brain haemorrhage at Waipu Beach last week has undergone brain surgery at Auckland City Hospital.
Family members say the Waipu father-of-one was feeling fine when he went out for an evening surf last Tuesday, but suffered a cerebral aneurism while in the water.
He was airlifted to Whangarei Hospital and transferred to Auckland the same evening.
He is now recovering from brain surgery on Sunday. Relatives say he would have died had it not been for the quick actions of emergency services and an Australian doctor who happened to be on the beach at the time.
