The week-end was to have seen the inaugural competition of the Surf and Turf competition, but the weather on Saturday saw the round at Castlepoint cancelled early in the day. There were a hardy few who ventured out onto the course on Saturday, but the scoring was mediocre.
The weather on Sunday was a bit better, and a smallish field took part in the stableford competition. Leading the way in the lower handicap group was Ivan Karaitiana with a total of 43 points, with Rob McKelvey in second place on 40 points and Bruce Herangi third on 38.
The scoring was not as good in the second group, with Brian Stevenson leading the way with 35 points, from Patrick Rimene on 34 and Ron Dean on 31 points. There were just two holes in two scored on the day, with those being scored by Bruce Herangi and Ivan Karaitiana.
Sunday saw the junior pennants team play against Castlepoint at home, and while I am not sure of the final scores, I am led to believe that the Mahunga team prevailed narrowly.
On Tuesday, the veterans group played in the second round of their Haddon Donald Trophy. Janet Shaw was the best of the ladies, with her score of 40 points giving her top spot in the lower handicap group, with Jean Bayly in second place in that group on 35 points, followed by Irene Phelps on 33. Judith O'Connor and Susan Christall shared the honours in the second group with 33 points, with Yvonne Allsworth in third place on 30 points.
Syd Whittington was the best of the men with 38 points giving him top spot in the second men's group, with Lin Jordan the runner up on 36 points, followed by Ron Hutcheson on 32 points. The lower handicap group saw Peter Campbell, Ken Luke and Fred Brittain all finish on 36 points.
The ladies nearest to the pin on the third hole was won by Jean Bayly, while Janet Shaw took the one on the sixth hole. Fred Brittain took the men's one on the sixth hole and Peter Campbell the one on the seventh hole.
Holes in two were scored by Fred Brittain, Peter Campbell, Janet Shaw and Irene Phelps.
Next week's competition for the veteran's group will be a bisque par round.
This coming week-end has the men playing in the Wairarapa Junior Strokeplay Championships, with the field teeing off from the first tee on both days, with the first groups starting at mid-day.
For any members playing on either day, tee off will be from mid-day off the eighth tee.
The ladies are playing in the third round of the Combined Committee Stableford and Francis Stableford competitions and also the second round of the Home Pennants on Saturday, while for the men the competition is a medal round. Sunday sees the ladies having a free day, while the club competition is another medal round.
Sunday will see a group from the Napier Cosmopolitan Club playing against the Masterton Club, with the tee off from around 9.00 am.
