Retired Masterton farmers Trevor and Bev Oliver have been overwhelmed with kindness after speaking publicly about being scammed out of their savings.
Since they spoke out about the scam, the couple have been visited by friends who gave them "hugs and flowers" and offered them moral support.
The Olivers lost at least $80,000 of their own money and many thousands of dollars loaned to them by friends and acquaintances.
The money was paid to overseas bank accounts as "fees" and "taxes" needed to release a $1.29 million lottery win.
The losses mean they will have to sell their home in rural Masterton to pay back those who loaned them money in amounts between $1000 and $6000.
