The Department of Conservation in Northland believes there is clear community support for a huge new marine reserve off the east coast at Mimiwhangata, 50km north of Whangarei. It would cover up to 11,200ha, making it one of the country's biggest.
DoC Whangarei area manager John Gardiner said public submissions gave "a clear signal" of solid support. It was also clear that people who fished the area were concerned about the impact of a reserve, and a petition had been made to oppose it.
If it is decided to take the idea further people will get another chance to make submissions next year.
