KEY POINTS:
The largest private sailing yacht in the world is currently in downtown Auckland, its masts towering over the Princes Wharf apartments it is docked alongside.
Named after the Greek goddess of wisdom, Athena is the pleasure craft of United States computer software billionaire Jim Clark.
Clark is best known as the founder of web browser technology company Netscape.
Other recent ventures include setting up MYCFO.com, a personal finance site for the ultra-rich, and Shutterfly.com, an online photo processing and delivery service.
However, Athena's famous owner is not on board his super yacht at present.
The yacht travels the world, meeting up with Clark at the various locations where it docks.
It came to New Zealand from Newcastle, Australia.
The luxury three-masted schooner, built at the Netherlands' Royal Huisman shipyard, is 90 metres in length, its masts are 61 metres high, and it is estimated to have cost around $30 million.
Pictures posted on superyacht review sites show its decadent interior, with a formal dining room, media lounge, salon, library and commercial grade kitchen all included.
The yacht stopped off in Nelson before arriving in Auckland, and has a crew of 20 on board.
It will be moored at Princes Wharf for the next two weeks, before continuing on to warmer temperatures in the tropics.
