KEY POINTS:
Mercedes-Benz has created another model for its race-bred AMG Black Series.
Following on from the CLK 63 Black, the company is upping the ante with a hard-core version of its super-luxury flagship convertible - the SL 65 AMG Black Series.
The car's 6.0-litre V12 bi-turbo engine boasts 493kW and 1000Nm of torque. It takes just 3.9 seconds to reach 100km/h from standstill and is electronically limited to 320km/h, lest it spins the Earth on its axis and turns back time.
Compared with the "basic" powerplant in the standard SL 65 AMG, new turbochargers were developed for the Black Series engine. The new design for the sports exhaust system's rear silencers reduces the exhaust gas back-pressure and help increase the power output.
The extensive use of carbon fibre and the removal of the Vario folding roof system has reduced weight by 250kg. The whole carbon fibre composite (CFRP) roof shell has a completely new design, with a flatter profile.
The CFRP rear spoiler, which is concealed in the boot lid, automatically extends 120mm at 120km/h, reducing the lift force on the rear axle at high speeds.
