Vinnie Kahui is standing for Auckland mayor in the 2010 local body elections. He provided this statement:
Hi, my name is Vinnie Kahui.
I want Auckland to be a world class city with MANA (pride).
I am not a career politician and don't align myself any political faction.
I'm not going for the position of Mayor for the MONEY or even worse, the EGO.
It is my intention to take leadership into the council, and steer the team of councillors in a direction that is for the interests and wellbeing of all Aucklanders and their communities.
The skills I bring to the table are that of experience ie extensive knowledge of Aucklands transport problems and simple ideas that will fix them, I have the ability to communicate effectively with different communities (ethnic, age, gender, area, social economic, and religious).
My personal goals for Auckland are to fix Aucklands Public transport system, look at ways at making it effective, efficient, eco friendly as possible and of course cheaper to use, which should go along way in also reducing traffic congestion.
Encourage sustainability across the region, by making it easier to develop sustainable buildings and homes and utilizing the brains of the students and visionaries across the region to come up with ideas that will promote a cleaner, greener Auckland.
Events, Bring the V8 supercars to Auckland, and other sporting and social events, as well as attracting film and T.V productions which will all bring a lot of money into the local economy and create jobs across the region. Retain all assets, I'd rather us pay money to ourselves than a corporation.
Effectively engage and communicate with the communities across the region to allows us to come up with ideas that will benefit your community, city, and region to make it a better place live and finally allow Auckland to gain a positive identity.
One good idea I got from talking to a person in the community was that maybe we bring in a taxi card which every time you purchase alcohol you receive taxi points which enable you to catch a taxi home, which will reduce the amount of drink driving incidents and accidents.
I am keen to listen, learn and work with the people of Auckland, qualities that all mayors should have, QUALITIES I will display.
Kind regards Vinnie Kahui. Ngatihaupoto,Ngatihine and Ngatipakeha.
