However, some rain was forecast for Westland later in the day.
For the South Island, the sunshine would disappear by Sunday, Ms Ranger said.
"On Sunday we are going to see a cold southerly change moving up the South Island and are expecting some rain, possibly heavy in Westland and maybe some scattered falls further east.
"It is quite a cold southerly so we might see a bit of a drop in temperatures."
Most of the North Island would be fine on Sunday, although some of the western areas could expect some rain, she said.
The cold southerly change that battered the South Island on Sunday would hit the North Island by Monday, Ms Ranger said.
"It's looking like it will be wet for the North Island, but then the South Island looks like it should clear up quite nicely and it should be mainly fine."
Weatherwatch.co.nz said the wettest regions on Monday would be those from Wellington to Taranaki.
By Monday afternoon the cold front would move north of Taranaki, bringing a southerly change up the east coast to Gisborne.
