"Whether they [the showers] hit Waitangi or just 10km further north sort of depends on the wind flow. But there's certainly the risk of showers, especially around the Bay of Islands over both Sunday and Monday."
He said this is because of an unsettled pattern and easterly flow in the upper North Island.
"The north of the country is sort of experiencing more like a La Nina summer than a El Nino one, which for the Waitangi weekend means we can expect high humidity, easterlies to continue. I don't think it's going to be quite as hot as it was over the last week. But if the sun comes out it will still be pretty hot inland."
Long weekend getaway hotspots of the Coromandel and Mt Maunganui will see lots of east to southeast winds, meaning it will not be that wet for those at the beach but rather cloudy and humid.
Duncan said those areas, and anywhere along the eastern coastline, might still see some drizzle patches, but that it will not be as wet as yesterday.
"I think we'll see a much drier Sunday on the way for those holiday spots, but it won't be completely dry."
The South Island has the best weather this weekend, Duncan said, with high pressure rolling in.
He said it was looking dry both today and tomorrow in Christchurch.
