The New Zealand Geographic Board will meet on April 29 to decide whether the concept of "Remutaka Pass" will go to public consultation.
Masterton District Council declared support for the name, which could be bestowed on the summit point of Rimutaka Hill Rd between Featherston and Upper Hutt.
South WairarapaDistrict Council supported changing the spelling of Rimutaka to Remutaka but did not support the word 'pass'.
Communications manager Chas Te Runa said the proposal related only to the summit and not to the road.
"The road has nothing to do with the Geographic Board," Mr Te Runa said. "That's to do with the councils and New Zealand Transport Agency."
If such a name for the summit was adopted, with the spelling of "Remutaka", then it would be up to the councils and the transport agency to decide what to do with the road name.
