KEY POINTS:
The mother of dead toddler Nia Glassie has become the sixth person charged in connection with the 3-year-old's killing.
Lisa Michelle Kuka appeared in the Manukau District Court yesterday charged with manslaughter after she allegedly withheld medical treatment from Nia on July 20.
No other details were given.
Kuka entered no plea and was remanded on bail. She will appear in Rotorua District Court on November 23.
Kuka is the sixth person charged in connection with Nia's death, in Auckland's Starship hospital on August 3.
The toddler - who had been in a coma - died after her life-support system was turned off.
A pathologist's report has confirmed her death was a result of the effects of a brain bleed.
Five people have already been charged over her death.
Wiremu Curtis, 18, who was the partner of Kuka, and Michael Curtis, 21, have been charged with murder.
Two others, Michael Curtis' girlfriend Oriwa Kemp, 17, and Michael Pearson, 19, face counts of manslaughter.
The fifth defendant, William Curtis, 47, the father of Wiremu and Michael, is accused of assaulting the pre-schooler and injuring her with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Outside court yesterday, Kuka's lawyer, Panama Leaunau said his client was surprised to have been arrested after going voluntarily to police.
He said Kuka thought she was helping police, and her arrest had left her "stressed".
"The first she knew about it was when she was arrested this morning."
The terms of Kuka's bail include reporting, residential and curfew conditions.
She is also forbidden to consume alcohol.
Rotorua police said they did not expect anyone else would be charged over the death.
