Ms Tomuri was chosen to compete at the national competition for Wairarapa after she won against nine other UCOL students. UCOL hosted a similar competition to The Wendy Hill Cosmetics Student Bridal Makeup competition where the students had to also do a bridal look.
Ms Tomuri said her success comes down to the education she received from her UCOL teacher Riki Anderson.
"Riki is amazing, he is so good at what he does ... UCOL is lucky to have him," Ms Tomuri said.
Mr Anderson said all his UCOL students who put together a bridal look created great submissions.
"I was incredibly proud of all our entries as they were all of a very high standard," Mr Anderson said.
Ms Tomuri said the beauty and makeup industry is hard to break into. She encouraged others who want to get into it to "stick to it, put yourself out there and do as much training as possible".
It is an industry where you never stop learning, so the more training you receive the better, Ms Tomuri said.
She said her only regret is not getting any experience working at a makeup counter where you get to know all the new products coming through.
She encouraged those starting out to get that experience.
Before studying at UCOL, Ms Tomuri completed a makeup artistry course at WelTec before working as a makeup artist for three years.
Ms Tomuri has nearly finished her UCOL Certificate in Beauty Services.
She plans to continue studying next year for a Diploma in Beauty Therapy.
