KEY POINTS:
A vehicle was found in the Waioeka Gorge, near Whakatane, early today.
Inspector Kerry Watson said a member of the public found the vehicle about 5am.
The Wellington-based police dive team is on its way to the scene.
Mr Watson said it was not known whether anyone was in the vehicle, or what time the dive squad would arrive to start their search.
