It was a stunning debut win for Pahiatua's Paul Whibley on his new Suzuki at the weekend.
Just back from completing his United States GNCC season where he finished sixth overall the man they call "The Axeman" won round one of the MotoSR-sponsored Bush Riders Cross-Country series on Sunday.
And it wasn't just a club day. To win, Whibley had to beat some of New Zealand's elite off-road riders, including fellow Suzuki ace Cam Smith (Marton), National Cross-Country ace Adam Reeves (Pahiatua) and Enduro legend Rory Mead (Wellington).
The Pahiatua organisers had laid out a 15-minute lap that took in the surrounding hills of Woodville and it featured a little bit of something for everyone.
Just back from completing his United States GNCC season where he finished sixth overall Whibley said he enjoyed being back on New Zealand terrain.
To win, Whibley had to beat some of New Zealand's elite off-road riders, including fellow Suzuki ace Cam Smith (Marton), National Cross-Country ace Adam Reeves (Pahiatua) and Enduro legend Rory Mead (Wellington).
"The course was an excellent mix of fast grassy hills, with a technical gully to keep the interest of the top riders and provide a challenge for the clubmen," said the 29-year-old Whibley.
"There was also a tight section through, with some rough going along a creek, with the option to dive into the water if the rider felt it was quicker to do so.
"Off the start line, my RM-Z450 fired up quickly and I nabbed the holeshot, although some early pressure from Simon Hull forced me to stay focused. I led the way, weaving through the rolling hills, chased by Rory Mead and Cam Smith. I felt very comfortable on the Suzuki and was able push hard. Some sections were flat-out with the bike pinned in top gear.
"I put the hammer down in the first few laps and pulled a good lead, allowing me to have some fun and enjoy the New Zealand terrain. "I cruised a little bit and didn't even know who was in second until afterwards. The guys chasing me must have been some way back.
"Anyway, after two hours of racing, the chequered flag was waved. Adam Reeves had worked his way into second with Rory Mead taking third."
Whibley returns to the United States in mid to late January.
