KEY POINTS:
A clinical psychologist is looking for volunteers to take part in a study into how women cope with depression after having a first baby.
"Most women experience some sad feelings immediately after giving birth, referred to as the blues, which normally lasts a couple of days," Sue Cowie, from Auckland University's psychology department, said yesterday.
"However, around 14 per cent of first time mothers experience prolonged feelings of depression and anxiety.
"These women often feel guilty about not coping and can have difficulty telling other people about how they are feeling as it is not an expected response for women with a new baby."
Ms Cowie said she was looking for women in the Auckland or Counties Manukau areas who were pregnant with their second child and who experienced depression after the birth of their first child.
