Three senior students from the Masterton Judo and Ju Jitsu Academy have successfully completed the New Zealand Ju-Jitsu Federation's coursework and exam for the level one coaching course.
Rupert Bunny, Rachel MacKenzie and Vinnie Morris were presented with certificates after the course, which provided an introduction to coaching and was aimed at the assistant instructor in a club environment.
Among topics discussed were ethical coaching, the roles and skills of a successful coach, how to recognise the different needs of students, identifying and managing risk, understanding ju-jitsu and the law and policies on drugs in sport.
Their award shows the Masterton trio have attained the level of understanding of sports science, first aid and martial arts coaching to be registered as a class one ju-jitsu coach
They are now looking forward to helping head coach Simon Ogden coach the Masterton academy's classes, which are held every Tuesday and Thursday from 7pm to 8.30pm.
