A bygone era and a cavalcade of wildly different vehicles set apart the Wairarapa College winter ball this year.
Ball-goers arrived all sparkles and glitter for the big night on September 12, alighting from a Kombi van, a Buick, Rhinos, a Bentley, a pink stretch Hummer, a dirt bike and even from the bucket of a John Deere tractor.
The ball had a 1920s theme and attracted more than 200 guests, who were each presented with a poker chip personalised with their name to use for admission before taking a step back in time.
Assistant principal Charmaine Nelson said the hall "looked wonderfully sophisticated" with swathes of netting billowing from the ceiling, a backroom gambling table with a roulette wheel, a photo-booth with props and the tables covered in ostrich feathers, while exotic drinks were on offer at a mocktail bar.
After watching a dance troupe perform the Charleston with a modern twist, ball-goers danced a formal waltz - after lessons with Year 13 dancers Gus Syben and Eden Shearer.
