A driver's decision to have an afternoon nap in a car parked in the grounds of Mt Albert Grammar School yesterday proved foolish when police swooped and detained him in connection with an aggravated robbery.
Sergeant James Cassin said students from the school's boarding hostel discovered the 36-year-old sleeping in a black BMW.
When they woke him to ask what he was doing, he started the car and chased the students in it.
Cassin said nobody was hurt but a police check revealed the man, whom he described as a "vagrant", was wanted for questioning over a possible aggravated robbery on the North Shore earlier that day.
He had allegedly punched a friend to get the BMW's keys.
Cassin said both men were on methadone and getting an accurate account of events was proving difficult.
Police had yet to decide whether charges would be laid.
