KEY POINTS:
Fake driver licences are being manufactured in Waikato schools and used by underage people to get into bars, say police.
Constable Murray Macdonald said over the past eight months police had seized "several driver licences" from bar staff.
"These are real licences that have been presented as identification by people trying to gain entry to licensed premises," he said.
Mr Macdonald said fake licences had also been found and police were warning schools to be wary of what their technology suites were being used for.
Mr Macdonald said police had spoken to 130 people and many of the people had "no idea" how much trouble they could get into by using someone else's drivers licence.
"It's fraud and not only can the person presenting the fake identification be prosecuted but the owner as well. The maximum penalty for such an offence is $2000," he said.
Mr Macdonald said 10 people had appeared before the courts on a total of 22 charges relating to altering or using forged documents.
"Those involved have predominantly been underage and are playing for high stakes with the maximum penalty for such offending being up to 10-years-imprisonment," Mr Macdonald said.
