A pair of renowned Kiwi musicians have led a workshop with Makoura College students.
James Illingworth and Kirsten Te Rito were involved in workshops at the college; they were available for two 90-minute sessions, said Makoura College music teacher Belinda Carey.
Music students were able to participate during the workshop by playing with the visiting musicians and then receiving feedback from them. Students were also able to ask questions of the professional musicians, Ms Carey said.
Illingworth, who has played with Little Bushman and the James Illingworth Trio, is recognised as one of New Zealand's leading pianists, not only in the jazz arena but also as an accompanist, composer, session musician, arranger and performer who effortlessly crosses many genre, she said.
Wellington-based Te Rito, Ngati Kahungunu and Rongomaiwahine, won New Zealand's Leading Female Maori Solo Artist at the 2012 Waiata Maori Music Awards and her debut album, Te Rito, was sung entirely in te reo Maori and received rave reviews.
