KEY POINTS:
Students charged over the riot in Dunedin on Saturday night jointly appeared at a special court hearing today.
The special sitting for a total of 52 people before Judge Stephen O'Driscoll got underway at 10am.
The most common charges being heard at Dunedin District Court are disorderly behaviour and disorderly behaviour likely to cause violence to property and people.
However, 21 people also face a charge of rioting. Others are charged with obstructing police, assaulting police and offensive language.
Several of the defendants have bail conditions forbidding them to consume alcohol.
The charges follow the post-Undie 500 riots in which cars and couches were burnt out and bottles thrown at police.
Several defendants, who have indicated they will enter guilty pleas, have been remanded to appear in other courts around the country, including Christchurch, Gore, Alexandra and Queenstown.
Those facing the more serious charge of rioting will reappear in court on September 25.
Most of the other cases have been put off until September 14.
