Students aid band in Shears set up

Chanel College students have helped the Masterton District Brass Band set up for the 2013 Golden Shears next weekend - the band's major fundraiser for the year.

The band have set up the War Memorial for the Golden Shears each year for the last 45 years. This is the second year the school had offered to help them set up.

Treasurer Ted Paris said it was the band's major fundraiser for the years and was worth about $4000.

All the band members get on board, and set up platforms at War Memorial Stadium, Masterton.

"It requires about 300 man hours of work."

Mr Paris said there was some building work involved as well as heavy lifting.

"The Chanel College boys came last year to help us out," he said. "They were so good, we asked if we could get then again this year.

"It's hard to keep all the guys busy doing jobs, but when we're putting in the nuts and bolts and the legs that go on the platform, they're good for that."

Student Devon Wilmshurst, 16, was one of the boys volunteering on Friday afternoon.

He said their teacher asked them to be involved and he didn't mind helping out.
