Mauriceville School pupils last week helped raise the first of several signs warning speeding drivers to slow down while passing their school.
Students also helped paint the four hand-crafted and diamond-shaped signs, which feature schoolchildren beneath the words Slow Down and Kids Learn Here. The signs are to be placed in pairs each side of the roadway on either side of the school grounds, principal Rebecca Stevens earlier said.
The idea began life two years ago through the Health Promoting Schools (HPS) team at Mauriceville after speeding drivers were branded the most concerning threat for the children.
The HPS scheme aims to bring together the school community to improve the well-being of the pupils, staff, and the community.
Representatives from several agencies attended the installation of the first sign alongside students and Mrs Stevens on Friday, including Holly McGeorge, Wairarapa Road Safety Council co-ordinator, Constable Susan Esler, school community officer, and Alex Birch, Masterton District Council rural roading engineer. The district council had helped fund the signs and was to also lay rumble strips fronting the school and complete roadside plantings to give the thoroughfare an enclosed appearance.
